Italian police detain tanners over tax evasion

According to a number of reports Italian police have arrested a number of tanners in the Arzignano region of Italy relating to VAT tax evasion. The police operation which has been underway in the region for the past six or seven months are investigating around 120 Italian tanneries in total.

Carlessi name is back

Following the closure of Italian tannery machinery makers, Fratelli Carlessi earlier this year a new company is being launched at the Tanning Tech exhibition this week. The new enterprise, Carlessi Srl, will be officially unveiled at the new company’s stand on October 13 in Bologna.
The former Carlessi company were most known for their leather through feed toggle drying tunnels and related equipment.

Brazilian meat companies sign up to Amazon moratorium

At a signing ceremony in Sao Paulo, Brazil on October 5, four of the world’s largest beef and leather companies agreed to ban the purchase of cattle from newly deforested land in the Amazon. The four, which includes Marfrig, Bertin, JBS-Friboi and Minerva – are some of the largest meat and leather processors in the world.

Researcher aims to combat red rot in leather

JBS and Bertin form world’s biggest tanner

JBS, the world's leading beef and protein products producer, agreed to merge with Bertin SA, it was announced on September 16. JBS will be the major shareholder. Following the recent purchase earlier this year of Brazilian tanning group BMZ by JBS, combined with the tanning capacity of Bracol, Bertin's leather division, the new company will become the largest leather processor in the world by volume. It is estimated that the respective equity value JBS and Bertin will be approximately 60-40%.

Marfrig buys controlling stake in Zenda

Marfrig Alimentos SA, the world's fourth-largest meatpacker based in Brazil, have acquired a 51% share in the Uruguay tanning group Zenda Leather. Marfrig said in a statement that it had agreed to pay $49.5 million to buy a 51% stake in the Uruguayan leather producer.

Italians come to Paris

Exhibitors from Italian tanneries and related businesses made up 44% of all the stands (336 in total) at the Le Cuir A Paris show which took place at Parc des Expositions de Paris Nord Villepinte, September 15-18. Despite the Anteprima show taking place in Milan this week many see Paris as a place to reach top-level designers from outside Italy. ‘65% of our visitors are from outside France and many come from the USA and Asia, particularly Japan as well as from Europe', Beatrice Rousseau, show manager, Le Cuir A Paris, told Leather International.

ICHSLTA to keep contract six unchanged

Sweaty foot fills gap in footwear comfort
