The environment of Korangi Industrial Area Karachi Pakistan

Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan and most of the industries are located in Karachi. Korangi industrial area contains thousands of various industries including textile, yarn, floor mills, leather etc. These industries are producing valuable products to earn and developing the Pakistan. Certainly Pakistan is developing rapidly, but this has also created serious environment problems. The causes are
Air pollution
In Karachi hundreds of vehicles are running with oldest are expired engine which are releasing more gases some of them do not have side window or have broken window or damaged seats. Factories and motor vehicle release gases which collect in a thick layer high up in the atmosphere. This layer acts like a blanket and prevents heat from the Earth from escaping into space. This result “global warming” and changes in the world`s climate. Rainfall decreases and the rise in global temperature is melting the polar ice caps, causing a rise in sea levels. The decrease in rainfall has been observed in Karachi for 3 to 5 years.
Solid waste product
As the living standards of people improve, they buy more things for their comfort- televisions, computers, cars, air conditioners and other household equipment. But the problem is what to do with the old things. Some of them can be sold and re-used and some are taken apart and recycled. The plastic packaging of goods is also a problem as it does not rot away nor is it recyclable: it just lasts as rubbish for hundreds of years. All around the city of Karachi also in the other cities of Pakistan except Islamabad there are huge, ugly garbage dumps which become the homes of rats, cockroaches and filth, causing diseases. The most dangers things is that many children belong to poor family living in huts chooses their need products.
Industrial solid waste
While industries are very important for the growth and development of a country, it is equally important to control the harmful ‘side effect’ of industry. Factories that produce chemicals and leather products often dump harmful liquid waste into the nearby rivers or canals, polluting the water sources. Although the leather industry in Karachi has a tanneries effluent treatment plant but still there is no treatment for tanneries’ solid waste. This solid waste is often thrown at the road side by a tannery or at the corner of a tannery in spite the presence of garbage or waste point this tannery`s waste can be seen every where.
This solid waste from tannery consists of chemicals, pigment, binder and raw trimming, wasted wool shaver dust, buffing dust and fleshing waste. These all wastes are very harmful and toxic and more horrible thing for environment point of view is that to reduce this waste pile people burn it and they make it more poisons for air. When chrome tanned leather cutting burn it produces lethal gases. These lethal gases can be observed in sector 7/A Korangi Industrial Area Karachi.
The world wide focus on ecology and environment has made us all aware of these concerns: we must look into the causes of environment pollution and looking for ways to solve and prevent these problems.
The GOVT. should also take action to mange this solid waste to make Korangi Industrial Area environment clean and free from poisonous pollution.
